Are you interested in applying your development skills to contribute to the planning and enforcement of Cannabis Legalization policies?

Reporting to the Senior Planner, the Development Compliance Officer will deliver planning and enforcement services as a member of a service delivery team within the Development Services Branch. The Development Compliance Officer will exercise a delegated degree of discretion while rendering decisions as the Development Authority.

You will use your strong communication skills working with the team and stakeholders in neighbourhoods and business communities. In this role you will ensure compliance with the Edmonton Zoning Bylaw and Municipal Government Act as related to planning and land use operations.

As a Development Compliance Officer, you will:

Provide customers with knowledgeable and timely responses to inquiries related to development and Zoning Bylaw contraventions

Provide instructions regarding City services and forwarding customers as required to the appropriate business area including dealing with zoning, development questions and application procedures for development permits

Conduct site inspections for zoning complaints and development applications

Complete delegated responsibilities that may include written or verbal warnings, tickets, Municipal Government Act Orders or decisions that may be discretionary

Provide support to internal staff that assists with rendering decisions on Development Permit applications

Prepare case files, presentations, court briefs, appeal hearings and give evidence in court as required

Assist the Planning Technician II's, Planners, Supervisors and Senior Planner with technical reviews and written responses

Related duties as required

2 year Diploma in Planning, Landscaping, Engineering, Architecture, Enforcement or related diploma program from a recognized educational institution.

2 years of directly related experience in planning, enforcement or architectural technical field including experience in zoning and land use bylaws, planning policy, development permits, and zoning and land use enforcement.

Experience working with regulatory, advisory, and other legislative bodies and documents related to Land Use Planning

Knowledge of planning, enforcement, architecture and landscaping in relation to land use planning and development in a municipal context

Strong familiarity with Zoning and Land Use bylaws, Municipal Government Act, Neighbourhood Structure Plans, Area Structure Plans and Area Redevelopment Plans

Strong oral and written skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders

Membership with the Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians (CACPT) is considered an asset.

Effective conflict resolution, critical thinking and investigative skills to effectively resolve difficult situations with sensitive issues

Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team

Exceptional interpersonal, organizational and time management skills

Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Must be able to obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business

Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
